Duties/ Responsibilities

We are currently seeking an individual who has a high level of communication, relationship management and negotiation skills to join our Environmental Health team on a temporary full time basis as an Environmental Health Officer.

The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in Health Science or equivalent and relevant experience as an Environmental Health Officer in local or state government. You will have experience dealing with the public in person, on the phone and via email along with experience working as part of a team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain an inspection service of all registered premises, wastewater treatment / disposal systems, caravan parks and public swimming pools.

  • Record and maintain the food sampling register to guarantee that accurate food sampling is undertaken as specified by legislation and in accordance CPI’s.

  • Respond to and investigate nuisances and pest control activities as required by legislation.

  • Ensure reports of infectious diseases are appropriately investigated and areas for improvement implemented as required by legislation.

  • Deliver Council’s environmental health obligations in the areas of legislation, community education and statutory compliance.

  • Ensure that the minimum immunisation sessions are undertaken as required by the relevant legislation.

  • The ability to work autonomously with limited supervision as well as being able to effectively plan, organise and manage your own time is paramount, so if you are a self-motivated individual, then we welcome an application from you!

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria below:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health Science or equivalent.

  • Ability to meet the legislation objectives of the role.

  • Extensive experience in inspection, review and approvals of onsite wastewater management systems, food and health premises and food sampling.

  • Excellent communication skills, relationship management and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, effectively plan to meet strict deadlines and manage competing priorities.

Duties/ Responsibilities

  • To provide a high level of professionalism administering Council’s enforcement and compliance functions to ensure Council meets its legislative and corporate requirements.

  • To enforce the provisions of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, Local Government Act, Building Code/Regulations, Protection of the Environment Operations Act and other legislation under which Council has jurisdiction, in relation to development and compliance.

  • To provide a high level of assistance and technical expertise to the Health and Environment section to meet statutory and community needs.

  • To effectively provide development assessment and compliance services to Council to meet statutory and community needs.

  • To undertake the assessment and determination of proposals for development and associated regulatory planning functions.

  • To effectively deal with health and environmental matters of significant complexity and appraise development applications before Council to a high degree of professionalism.

  • To work in a complementary manner within the operational framework of the Division.

To be successful you will bring

· Tertiary qualifications at degree level in planning, development assessment, building surveying, environmental health, compliance enforcement or a related discipline.

· Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant legislation such as Local Government Act 1993, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Public Health Act 2010 and Food Act 2003 and associated regulations.

· Demonstrated professional experience in development and environmental assessment, compliance and enforcement.

· Proven excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to undertake a range of projects and tasks, address issues promptly and prioritise work to meet deadlines and performance targets.

· Proven excellent communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to deal with a broad range of customers and community representatives in a courteous and professional manner.

· Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously with minimal supervision, whilst also demonstrating a high level of collaboration across the team and with key stakeholders.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant field or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area; completion of a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, or similar qualification/training, would be an advantage.

  • A Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health), Bachelor of Health Science (Public and Environmental Health), Bachelor of Public Health (Environmental Health) or equivalent which is accredited by Environmental Health Australia and be eligible for membership of Environmental Health Australia (EHA).

  • Discipline expertise in environmental health; broader public health expertise (for example, health policy and law, and population approaches) would be an advantage.

  • Demonstrated competence in environmental health teaching and curriculum development.

  • Evidence of high quality and/or high impact research conducted and published or otherwise disseminated, relative to opportunity.

  • Demonstrated record of achievement as a leading practitioner with a reputation for skills, knowledge and expertise at a state/national level.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, or co-supervise, honours and postgraduate students.

Additional Criteria for Senior Lecturer

  • Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership at course/program/research group or similar level.

  • Strong record of research publication, with appropriate evidence of quality and impact.
