Duties/ Responsibilities

Conduct environmental health assessments for proposed developments, preparing high‑quality reports and providing policy advice to Council staff, consultants, proponents and the community.

Undertake routine environmental health inspections, investigate complaints and report on potential breaches of food safety, environmental and public health legislation, using strong negotiation and communication skills.

Support the Environmental Health Team in delivering key projects and programs that advance the Environmental Health Strategy, including community education initiatives.

Apply sound knowledge of environmental health legislation and concepts relating to water, noise, air pollution and public health, maintaining specialist expertise where required.

Analyse environmental reports for compliance with standards and legislation, utilise Council’s information systems (ECM and Ci) for document and complaint management, and provide advice as part of the unit’s duty roster while using strong problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills.

We are seeking:

A candidate eligible for membership with Environmental Health Australia, with sound knowledge of environmental and public health matters including food safety, air/noise/water pollution, contaminated land, on‑site sewage management, acid sulfate soils, noise assessment and water quality monitoring.

A strong understanding of inspection principles and practices, and the ability to apply environmental and public health legislation within a local government context.

Demonstrated high‑level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear reports and engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.

Proven conflict‑resolution ability and well‑developed problem‑solving skills to effectively manage challenging environmental and public health matters.

Demonstrated proficiency in digital and information management systems, including GIS and other software used to support environmental health functions.

Duties/ Responsibilities

There is an exciting opportunity to work with the Development Services Team as an Environmental Health Officer. This position provides professional and technical assistance, information, advice and reports to the Coordinator Environmental Health, the Manager Development Services and Chief Executive Officer on all matters related to public and environmental health in the Shire.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide an outstanding level of customer service to internal/external customers by answering enquiries promptly and effectively and following up customers to ensure that their request has been satisfied.

  • Processing of various applications and applying appropriate public health, environmental health and environmental conditions.

  • Undertake various inspections and monitoring activities in accordance with statutory obligations and operational procedures.

  • Tertiary level qualification - Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or equivalent acceptable to the Executive Director of Public Health.

  • Experience as an Environmental Health Officer is desirable, remuneration and role will reflect experience.

  • 'C' class drivers licence.

As an Environmental Health Officer, you will play a key role in protecting and promoting public and environmental health across Whyalla.

You will be accountable for ensuring the proper standards of public and environmental health are maintained throughout our community. This is undertaken by monitoring, investigation, and promoting public and environmental health issues with legislative action where necessary.

- A relevant tertiary qualification in an environmental health related field

- Demonstrated experience or theoretical knowledge of investigating public health risks, pollution incidents and similar environmental issues
