Summary Information

The response to a smoke complaint is determined by the volume and type of material being burned. Only, dry green waste material should be burned, where permitted by the Local Government. Allowances to burn green waste vary between Local Governments and may be determined by lot size.

Wood fired heaters are permitted however they must ensure that they are used in a manner that does not cause a nuisance by way of smoke to neighbours. Smoke causes an odour nuisance and may cause health concerns in persons with respiratory illnesses. If smoke is associated with a business see Unauthorised Discharges.
