11.1 Food Premises Applications

Summary Information

A new food premises is usually identified at the building licence stage. During this time the plans are assessed to determine compliance with legislation prior to construction; here relevant conditions are provided. Once the premises is complete a final inspection is conducted by the EHO at which time the premises can be registered and assigned a priority risk classification.

The Department of Health are responsible for the following premises; public hospitals where food is prepared for patients, the primary production of dairy and seafood and locations such as Kings Park, Hillarys and Rottnest which do not fall within a local government jurisdiction.

New food businesses must register with the local authority unless they are an exempted premises, in which case they must notify the local authority of their business; both activities use the same prescribed form. Examples of exempted businesses include very low risk premises such as charities that do not produce potentially hazardous food or cook it directly prior to sale and retail outlets such as chemists and newsagents.
