As the Senior Officer Environmental Health (EHO), you will be responsible for professionally delivering environmental health services to the community that protect and enhance public health, community amenity and safety and environmental standards through the monitoring and enforcing of statutory requirements and through proactive initiatives that positively contribute to overall community wellbeing.

Essential Knowledge & Skills:

  • A tertiary qualification in Applied Science - Environmental Health, Health Science or equivalent field.
  • Current professional membership, or eligibility for membership, of Environmental Health Australia (Queensland Division).
  • A comprehensive knowledge of contemporary best practice in in environmental health and public health related complaints, including Local Laws, Acts, Regulations and relevant legislation.

Meander Valley Council are seeking an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to join our dedicated Environmental Health team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified EHO looking to further their professional knowledge and experience. A cadetship or graduate position can be considered for a student studying towards an environmental health qualification.

As a regional Council, the range of work you will undertake in the Meander Valley will be varied across a range of functions to ensure environmental health requirements are met under the relevant legislation. These functions include food business and public health risk activity regulation, water quality monitoring, coordination of immunisation programs, assessment of mass outdoor public events such as Agfest, Deloraine Craft Fair and annual music festivals, private burial and exhumations approvals, assessment of onsite wastewater designs (including dairy wastewater management), nuisance regulation, customer service across all environment health functions and providing environmental health advice regarding planning and development applications.

Duties/ Responsibilities

Reporting to the Environmental Health Coordinator, the role includes carrying out statutory functions of an Environmental Health Officer under the Food Act 1984, Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, Environmental Health Protection Act 2017, Tobacco Act 1987 and other legislated or general tasks related to the position.

A key component of the role will be to conduct routine inspections of registered businesses (food, accommodation, hairdressing and beauty premises, tattooists, caravan parks) to ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The role will also be responsible for investigating communicable disease outbreaks and public health complaints, including noise complaints.

Other tasks include conducting education and enforcement inspections of tobacco retailers and mandatory smoke-free locations, as well as inspections and approval of onsite wastewater treatment (septic) systems.

  • A tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification from a recognised tertiary institution that is accredited by Environmental Health Australia
  • Drivers Licence
  • Evidence of vaccination, or be able to be vaccinated against and remain vaccinated against - Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis and Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis screening, to identify if the tuberculosis vaccination may be required
  • Declaration of serious discipline history must be disclosed

Duties/ Responsibilities

As an Environmental Health Officer you will support the provision of quality environmental health services which will enhance the health and lifestyle of the community. You will also ensure the effective and efficient administration of relevant Council policies, legislation and regulations.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

Council is seeking an Environmental Health professional with a Degree/Diploma in Applied Science, Environmental Health or a Diploma of Public Health and Certificate of Competency from the Victorian Health Department.

Experience working as an Environmental Health Officer in a regional local government or demonstrated experience in a relevant/similar field is desired with knowledge of food safety, public health and wellbeing, onsite wastewater management, tobacco control, aquatic facilities and complaint investigation.
