Best Practice Manual

This Environmental Health Best Practice Manual has been developed for Environmental Health Officers working in Western Australia. Its primary use is intended for graduates and Environmental Health Officers new to Western Australia to provide them with an initial point of reference for the varied tasks undertaken in local government authorities.

The information provided within is not exhaustive and policies and protocols may vary between Local Governments. The templates are provided to remove the burden of recreating numerous standard forms and information documents; these have been compiled from various Local Government’s and may need to be edited to reflect the needs of the local government in which they are used. It is also important to note that delegations will vary between Local Government’s and the level of delegation must be determined before undertaking certain tasks such as issuing licences and approvals.

State Government departments provide a valuable resource for Environmental Health Officers and references to various departments such as the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Conservation are provided throughout where specialist advice may be required. Click the names of each Department for a direct link to their website.

All legislation within Western Australia can be obtained free of charge from the State Law Publisher website at www.slp.wa.gov.au.

Australian Standards can be purchased from SAI global Limited however there is a fee associated with the purchase of these; often Local Government’s have pre-existing arrangements to purchase Australian Standards or a number of relevant standards may have already been purchased by another department (E.g. Building Services).
